Decorative solar lights add sophisticated illumination to any landscape or garden. There are various styles of solar lights to choose from. These ideas may help in making your choice.

The position of your lights is a big deal.

You probably have some idea of where you want your lights positioned. Take a new look at that location with a few things in mind. Is there adequate sunlight in the area you’re thinking of placing your lights? Is there adequate drainage? Can the area drain properly? Your lights can be damaged and even ruined by standing water. How much light are you looking for?

Usually solar lighting is used as accent lighting. They are really not intended to be used as safety lighting. The type of solar lights you will want to choose will depend on the lighting results you want to achieve. If you want to highlight certain areas of your garden at night decorative lighting may not be your best choice.

Once you decide what kind of lighting you want and what area will be best suited for them you are ready to start looking at the many decorative solar lights available.

A frequent question when buying solar lighting is, how many solar lights will I need to buy?

Alternating the placement of your lights with other features such as plants gives a more balanced look to your garden. Staggering your lights down a walkway is a good idea. This is more appealing to the eye. Your lights should be evenly spaced about 6 inches to 1 foot apart. Measuring your space before hand with and idea of how you will space your lights will give you a rough estimate of how many lights you will need. Keep in mind that most solar lighting sets are sold in lots of even numbers.

Solar lights come in as many styles and types as you can imagine.

When they were first introduced, solar lights had very little style and little to no selection of variety. Now decorative solar lights come in any number of styles, sizes and even colors. The style of your lights really depends on your preference. There is a large selection of retro style lights available in many finishes to compliment any garden theme. Some lights even come in antique coppor finish for those looking for an antique look. Don’t want to see your lights in the day time? Some lights are flush with the ground so the blend into the landscape. Looking for a more sophisticated look? There are hundreds of styles to choose from.
