What’s Solar Power?

March 6, 2010 by John Henderson

This is the time when the necessity for efficiency is terribly high considering the rising cost of resources and private goods. With the present business condition, it is very hard to cope with the rise in oil costs impacting on all the other aspects of man’s consumption including electricity, water, food and other basic necessities. It’s good that there are options to consider in saving on electricity and other consumer wishes. Solar energy is an option that is now becoming increasingly popular because of the advantages that it gives apropos the family finances and the environment.

Solar power is basically a means to generate electricity from the major source of light, the sun. It can be directly or indirectly got. Photovoltaics is used for direct solar energy while concentrating solar energy is an indirect means. With photovoltaics, the necessity for electricity that’s bought normally generated from the burning of fossil fuels, can be thrown out.

There are already a good number of solar thermal power plants in different nations. Though solar power can be intermittent compared to the standard source of electricity, there were methods to address this reservation to be sure that there in uninterruptible supply of electricity to those who are counting on solar power. This has been scrupulously studied and considered and won’t pose any problem to those who are interested to use the service.

Before, the employment of solar power became popular in calculators. There isn’t any longer a need for batteries and the solar power is stored for night time use thru the employment of solar cell. This reduced the energy expenses and has become effective even until now.

There are solar watches and other small gadgets that derive their energy from the sunlight. The technology has been around and it is now invading the bigger areas of life with the main source of electricity included in operating households and even large company operations. The benefits are great and the benefits are enormous when using solar energy as electricity and power source.

Another implementation could be a parallel use of solar power and the existing electricity source. In the future, this will still be efficient and when the amount of solar power is enough, the backup can stay for emergency purposes. The savings that’ll be generated in this approach is important. When collectively considered, the impact to the national consumption will be massive.

The realization of solar power starts with the solar cell which is also called photovoltaic cell. This cell converts the light into its corresponding electric current more commonly known as the photoelectric effect. This was first discovered by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel as he observed that there are materials that release electrons when hit by the light coming from the sun. Subsequently, these materials produce electric current. From this observation, the first solar sell was developed in the year 1880s by Charles Fritts. This prototype was discovered to convert less than 1% of the light into electricity and this study has been pursued in time. Today, the planet’s largest solar thermal power stations are located in the United States and Spain.

The employment of solar power will surely improve the environment and it can make contributions to the industrial situation of households because of its efficiency and effectiveness in providing electricity.
